UMPC Debut Today

UMPC - Ultra-Mobile PC. M$ had this underwraps for some time and unveiled it today. Basically it's a smaller PC tablet. The Tablets were/are pretty cool, but because of non-exsistant marketing and high price, people stuck with the traditional notebook and the tablets floundered.

The cool thing about the UMPC is that they use full size versions of apps. No need for watered down PDA software. Same with the OS.

With the tablet feature you can flip the screen 180 and use a stylus pen to write in Word.

Samsung and Asus each make a version.

I predict a flop

They made something called a Toshiba Libretto many years ago: Same thing, ultra mobile PC with the full blown windows:

Never worked because it was too small to be really useful as a road warrior workhorse and too big to be a pocket device.

I personally would rather just have a sony TX. 2.7 lbs and the battery runs for 7 hours instead of 3.

I agree it will flop. Gizmo minded executives will play with it for awhile but just like the PC Tablet, the masses just won't jump on. It's a shame really, both the tablet and this are really neat units.

Make an aftermarket USB add-on kit consisting of a balance-sensitive attachment that allows the unit to act as a steering wheel, with butterfly shifters, and a tiny set of wired USB gas/brake pedals that could fit in your coat pocket but can also easily be dropped down onto the floor in front of your seat on a commercial airliner, then make it compatible with F1 Challenge or the CCC sim, (the view should always be perpendicular to Earth axis no matter how much you twist the “wheel”, ‘cept for when you roll), and I’ll be very happy to buy one of these. Bonus points for an armrest clamp-on sequential shifter lever.

OQO (www.oqo.com) beat M$FT to the bunch, but the M$FT version has a bit more sex appeal. In either case, these are doomed except for a niche following/market.

In fact, that looks better with the sliding keyboard and the 5" screen instead of 7" making it smaller and lighter.
